Let's meet Celtlux from the A4WDM forum and have a look at his pride and joy, his SR5 Duel Cab Toyota HiLux.
Talking Dirty with CELTLUX...
Name: Brook Marrington
Location: Moving back to Brisbane soon!
What do you do for a crust? I have my own Fabrication business called C44Fabrications (Custom 4x4 Fabrications).
When did you join the A4WDM forums and why? I joined (officially) in May 2005. The reason I joined was due to a serious motorbike accident, I was bed & home ridden for 4 mths & you can only take so many Soaps & Oprah.
What do you drive and how long have you owned it: 2003 V8 Land Rover Discovery. I have owned it since 2004.
What modifications have you done to it in that time:
ARB Sahara front bar & winch.
ARB rear airlocker (4wd has centre difflock & traction control so haven't needed front locker as yet)
GME UHF
Rhino roof bars & basket.
Snorkel
Dual Battery system with FULL size second battery (which is a huge undertaking)
110L Waeco
Custom modified Mickey Thompson Cassic Locks (16x8) & 33" MTR's which give me 4" wider wheel track to match the lift thanks to Ryano of FOURBY'S
C44F high clearance rear bar with rear 1/4 panel cut.
C44F full replacement heavy duty sliders
C44F custom suspension (4" lift) -
FRONT - 12" travel remote canister Edelbrock race shocks, Dobinson coils, custom top shock mount, custom lower eye adaptor replacement. Rear lower guard has been trimmed, 100m extended brakelines.
REAR - 12" travel remote canister Edelbrock race shocks, Custom airbag 50mm lift kit, 13" travel airbag, custom top airbag mount & plate, the ride height has been re-calibrated, 100mm extended brakelines.
I will be making a kicked or bent passenger side watts link arm to minimise the chance of suspension bind at full flex.
Where do you like going bush:
I like to go to LCMP, Glasshouse, Rover Park, Fraser Is, 5-Rocks, Double Is or where ever mates want to go.
Any members off this forum you usually go wheeling with? I usually go wheeling with Twisty, Bundymonkey, Boof, Cracka, Gidget, Big Boots, A1 Mech, etc....
Lockers, lift, rubber or barwork -- what's the first thing you should put on a stocker, and why?
First thing I would recommend would be recovery gear even just the basic snatch strap, couple of D- shackles, shovel & hi-lift. After that sliders, then a lift with suitable rubber to suit the lift followed by barwork & winch to save panel damage but leave the lockers till later.
Tell us about that first 'ooops' moment you had offroad:
My first REAL "oops" moment would probably be at 5-Rocks in '89 when me & 2 mates decided to go to 5-Rocks after being out at the night club Flamigos, I owned a single cab (bench seat) '84 Hilux trayback. It was about 3am so we threw the esky, tarps, poles sleeping bags in the back & headed off. We were making our way along the forestry road when it started to rain. Anyway we decided to keep going as we had a regular spot which offered plenty of shelter. The rain was coming down hard & we were by this time on the sandy track coming up to a part of the track which used to be called the washing machine. Just before there a part of the track had collapsed & we come to a halt. I had a couple of goes but didn't make it. Went back further got a run up & gave it a good go. I had gotten further but in return got bogged & couldn't get out.
We sat in the Hilux (had a beer) & thought about how we wished it wasn't raining as we didn't bring any other clothes & not much chance of a fire. My mates bit the bullet & got out & pushed but no success. I hopped out & we all began to dig.
After about 20 minutes in the rain I happened to have a look at my front hubs to suddenly realise that in our haste to get to camp & too busy talking about the talent at the club & listening to music myself & my 2 mates (that were also supposedly 4wd savy) had totally forgotten to lock the hubs in.
I am still living that down when we all meet-up at a BBQ & we have a few too many beers under the belt it often comes up.
What's next on the list for your truck?
Finish the roof rack, belly plates & front tube bar will probably be about it as I am currently looking for a comp truck to build so it will take up all my spare time in future.
Any modifications you've made and since regretted, and why? The only thing that I don't like on my D2 is the front ARB bar when offroad as it catches when doing the real ruff stuff.
What's the best single piece of advice you could give anyone new to 4WDing reading this?
Learn how to drive your 4wd while going threw stages of development. Don't just jump in & get lockers, 35's & 5" lift. You can have more fun picking lines & getting to know throttle control rather than just driving up the middle.
Any other hobbies that your involved in?
I don't do many hobbies anymore (race bikes & ski) due to my injuries but I am going to try & buy a ski boat & get back into it probably more for the kids than myself.
