There
must be something funny in the water in
Sweden, if this XC70 Cross Country is anything
to go by. Built by Claes Blomquist and the
Inventor Racing Team to contest the 2004
Dakar Rally, this Volvo on roids features
beam axles, leaf springs and a turbo-diesel
engine. The running gear is actually taken
from a Volvo C303 military truck, as used
by the Swedish Army. The engine, meanwhile,
is derived from a production common-rail
five-cylinder oiler found in road-going
Volvos, but modified to produce 150kW and
400Nm. On those huge tyres, it only has
a top speed of 151km/h, but that should
be ample, given the rough terrain the endurance
rally takes in. If only they were all built
like that...
