Uploading a video to YouTube

It’s time to upload all of your 4WD video clips onto the internet so everyone can look at the stuff you and your truck get up to. Now you don’t have to be Stephen Spielberg to make a short clip for the internet nor do you need thousands of dollars worth of expensive equipment. In fact most digital cameras and even some mobile phones are quite capable of taking reasonable videos for the internet.

The quality of videos for the internet is generally lower than most forms of video, because the higher the quality of a video on the internet, the longer it takes to watch on the internet.

So what is youtube? Youtube is an online video streaming service where members can view and share video clips via the internet.

Our hope at www.4wdmonthly.com.au is to have an area dedicated to video clips, a place where you can show your clips and watch many others. The crew at Australian 4WD Monthly also want to film small snippets of what they get up to each month in the magazine, from new car test drives to tips and techniques.

Uploading a video to youtube, Photobucket etc is a relatively simple process that you should be able to do in a matter of minutes. Follow the instructions below for a step-by-step guide. I will be using Youtube as an example, but there are a number of different places you can upload videos to.

Part I: How to upload a video

(Note: blue arrows show you where to click)

Keywords

Browser: basically means your basic internet page

1)      First make sure you have the video clip saved onto your computer, in a file that is easy for you to find.

2)      Open your internet browser and type www.youtube.com in your address bar.

3)      Now click on ‘Upload Videos’ in the top right hand corner of the screen.

4)      Before you can upload onto Youtube you must first register (if you are not already a member). This is free and should not take long. If you are already a member sign in with your username and password and skip to part II.

5)      Fill in your details and click ‘Sign Up’ at the bottom of the registration form. Make sure you remember your username and password, because you will need this every time you wish to upload a video.

6)      If there are any errors after clicking on ‘Sign Up’ it will most likely be because the username you have choosen already exists. You will need a unique username.

7)      Now check your email (the same email address that you entered when you registered) and you should have received a verification email. Click on the link in this email to finish the registration process.

Part II: How to upload a Video

Congratulations, you are now registered and can upload videos in no time at all, it’s simple.

1)      Open up your internet browser and go to the Youtube site again (www.youtube.com).

2) Click on ‘Upload Videos’ (The same as in Part I: How to upload a video)

3)      Bet this page looks familiar, this time on the right-hand side, enter your username and password (the same as when you registered) and click ‘Log In’.

4)      Fill in the details about the video you are trying to upload. In red are examples I have used. When finished click ‘Continue Uploading’ at the bottom of the page.

5) Ok, now is as technical as it gets – if you have had no problems getting to here, this is going to be a breeze. Firstly, click on the ‘Browse’ button to locate your video file. In the new window that appears (the top left of the example picture) you must look through your files and find the video file you wish to upload. Highlight it and click ‘open’.

Secondly, where it says broadcast, leave it as public – this means everyone can see your video – we all want to see it! Thirdly, click upload video. This should take a while as it loads the video onto the web, the larger your movie file the longer it will take to upload.

6) You will now be taken to another page where youtube would like you to check the details of your video, check to make sure everything is correct and down the bottom of the screen click ‘Update Video Info’.

7) Well done, your video is uploaded on the internet. To see your video click on ‘My Account’ located at the top right side of the page.

Now we want to see it!

1) Go to ‘My Account’

2) Now click on the video you want to send us

3) You should have been taken to another screen that plays your video. What is written in the address bar at the top of this page is what we at 4WD Action need from you. (It should look something like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iV5Cyws0i6E obviously yours will be slightly different, but you get the picture). Copy an paste this into an email and send it to

4wd@expresspublications.com.au

Thank you for your time uploading your 4WD videos and sending us the link to them, once you have had a little bit of practice at uploading it will only take a second to repeat the process.
