Default Wear on BFG M/T KM2

People, this is an issue I will provide more info about shortly - but a person close to me has been running the new BFG KM2 M/T and had them wear very very quickly. BFG have been contacted about the issue... Has any one else had this issue...?
We are not statisfied with the issue being resolved yet......

Please note - no question they grip well and do the job offroad extremely well...

I am not bring this up without just cause and much thought..

Default KM2 excessive wear?

No problems with the rate of wear on my KM2's yet.
I think that at the moment the wear has been much the same as the KM's I previously had on my patrol.
Size I am running is 285/75 16"

Mine have travelled arround 12000ks and are getting close to half worn.

Not very happy with wear but extremely happy with performance (except the one i ripped the side out of)

Size is 285/75r16

So you will get around 24,000kms from the tyres before they need replacing?
Exactly what is it you have done with the tyres to get such a short life span out of them?

The person I have spoken of is my Father - he has done 14,000 km - front tyres 50% worn - rear tyres 60% worn.
245 x 75r16 - fitted to 08 Hilux TD Extra cab with replacement ROH
16 x 7 rims - two inch lift.
The Hilux was purchased new and 20k + spent on the ute for off road travel.
2,500 km has been on gravel roads -
He expects to only get 26-28,000km from a brand new set
He is well aware of tyre pressures and correct usage.
Currently on his way home from Perth.
He has always used BFG All terrains for many years - but decided to use the new M/T KM2 on the Hilux -
I am mates with people that work at a 2 large tyre centers who deal in BFG - and they are aware of the issue... Iwont say any more about thaqt...
I will post my Fathers exact words and dealing with BFG if the need arises...
But I will add - myself and 5 other people close to me have been using the old BFG M/T for years... thought they were the best tyre around.

That is absolutely shocking wear... my Goodyear MTRs have around 35 000Kms on them and are at about 50% and im unhappy with that...

Dammit, I was thinking about a set of these as replacements for my STTs when they are done.

My BFG KM's have done 12000 k's so far and they would almost still pass as new. About 2000 k's of that has been on dirt roads with a few numerous low range hill climbing attempts. Im a lazy prick with tyre pressures to, mine constantly sit on 29psi cold. I couldnt be any happier with mine. My mate bought the KM2's at the same time i got mine so well see how his last.

Thats my point. To have the tyres down to 50% at 12000k's surely they have been flogged/misused. I very much doubt that the tyre is a dud and from others running them have just said they are very happy with them with completely different results than this one mentioned.
I will be giving them a go once my old ones are out. Great product imo.

Thats not on. Havent done enough on mine to see any wear yet, but if they are half gone at 12,000 I will be exceedingly pissed!!

I dont know much about compounds, but these are clearly a soft compound. What sort of trade-off can you expect for a full Mud Terrain like this that is as quiet and comfortable on road as a road tyre, and grips exceedingly well in the wet both on road and off? Doesnt chip or cut easily. And hopefully wont turn to marble years before the tread is gone, like all the used tyres I've had seem to have done.

Ok i have just measured the tread (as close as i could) rear measures 8mm and front about 10mm after 12000ks of use, They have been used for a big outback trip through several different types of terrain and tyre pressures have been adjusted to suit conditions.

The car weighs just over 3 tonne empty and when loaded with camper trailer attatched would be getting close to 6 tonne.

I have had 3 sets of cooper stts before the km2s and the car has only travelled arround 116000ks and it was only getting about 25000ks out of the coopers as well which is the main reason i changed brands.

The tread compound appears very soft and cuts and chips easily. I tore the side out of one alot easier than i would have thought possible.

The off road traction and on road performance is amazing though.

6 tonne is ALOT of weight!! not sure why so little k's. im not sure about everyone elses km2's but mine aint exactly quiet on road. i run 34psi on road, which works for my 4 psi rule, but its my first set of muds so im not sure if they are loud compared to others!!

A-hem. Not the sort of thing that was offered when I was asking around!! I recall phrases like "lots of miles" and "still like new...!!"

Mine dont seem to suffer much, and I ripped the wall on one of my old coopers for really no good reason. It happens.

Dragging that kind of weight around on those roads though, would explain alot! And wait for the flames from everyone who says they get 100,000 out of coopers!!

Just reckon mine make no more noise than my roadies, and certainly a lot less than the old (hard) coopers I had.

I dont think I'm convinced by this thread that they were a bad choice. Run soft muddies on outback roads and you can expect a bit of wear. Certainly driving on these has turned me around on the value of good tyres. I love em. If they wear a bit quicker, so be it. But then they only get bolted on to go offroad, so it will be many many years before I clock up enough K's to wear em out with occassional weekend trips to the high country!!

Well... to continue my point - the wear on my Fathers Tyres is not caused by over weight vehicle or driving style.
No tyre unless its a soft comp style should only last just over 20,000km

We have many years experiance getting at least 50,000km and over from the old BFG M/T. Used on the Highway to drive to work every day..........
My mate just got 80,000km from a set of 33" 15" BFG M/T on a Hilux with Holden V6 fitted doing 2 hours a day on tar roads to get to and from work. Another mate has 305 75 16 old style BFG M/T on his 100 Series wagon - done just over 10,000 km and still look like new. And yes he also drives on the tar to and from work everyday.

Now.. this is actual fact.... But I won't name my source or any names..
There are northern and southern hemisphere compounds produced by BFG -northern are soft compound - southern are hard compound. When the supply of the new KM2 was in demand and stocks were low - a certain amount of northern compound tyres were brought into the country to create stock and fill demand. Hence some are wearing out as they are too soft for our conditions.
So beware when purchasing the new KM2 M/T.........

WOW..............

I really dont know what to say, i couldnt be happier with my KM2's.

285/75R16.

And i just posted this in another thread here on the forums...

I took my old girl down to the tire dealer where i purchased my BFG MT KM2's for a rotation last friday.

Ive done a little over 12,000km on them.
(Mostly 4x4ing, including 4000km in one hit doing the Strzelecki)

They took one look at my tires and asked how many km's id done because they still looked new and were wearing 100% evenly all round. They told me to give it another 5000km then drop back.

Its hard to judge properly with the new tire shine and all, but there is 1mm tread depth difference... not bad for 12,000km.

.............................

I always adjust my tire pressures to suit the road surface.

On the blacktop i run 42PSI all round.
On gravel i run 34PSI.
4x4ing anything between 18-26PSI.

Travis.

Very interesting information there.

FWIW i purchased my KM2's on the 12.05.2009 and i clearly recall about a month later stocks running out everywhere around here.
