OffRoadDave's 80 [Wonangatta Valley - The fun bits and not so fun bits - New Pics Up]
Hey folks, after selling the Navara and doing more miles in the last week than I have done in the last 6 months looking for the right car to get into next I came across this beauty, not a mark on it except for a slightly bent side step where they took it off road once, I think that scared them out of going off road again, so I have put down a deposit and if all goes to plan I pick her up tomorrow. Shes got 270k on the clock, 4.5Ltr petrol engine and the interior is absolutely spotless, looking forward to getting the new truck home, then the fun begins.
Initial plans are 2" lift and shocks, service and rear power outlet for fridge before heading off to Border Tk in 2 weeks.

A good 80 is getting very rare these days.
What mods do you have planed in the long term.

Looks good.
Can you make into a Dubia style Landcruiser.
The 4.5's are the motor of choice.
Dave.

Not sure at this stage mate, want to set it up for touring, so probably a rear wheel carrier for 2nd spare, roof rack, after that will take some thought, don't want to rush things with this one and get it right 1st time.

What's a Dubia style? Do you mean Dubai style big turbo and no bonnet.
I tell you the 4.5 motor in this one is a good unit, had a real good listen to it and its the quietest motor I've heard in a long time, surprised me for the Ks that are on it, no funny ticks or anything weird about it.

Well spotted, it is missing, already got a new mirror for it on the way, will need that for the roady, the owner said she clipped a tree and it popped the mirror out, which of course smashed into little pieces once it hit the tarmac.

Hey Mate
Damn that is very very tidy!!! You should be over the moon!!! The 80's are a top truck, good to see you seen the light and joined the Toyota club . They are a very reliable truck and the old 1FZ-FE (4.5L) although quite thirsty will go and go and go and go......you get the idea.
Will keep my eyes on this thread and see what ya do to her.
Enojoy!!!

Cheers for the comments guys, not going to go too nuts on it, it's the daily driver as well, if I wanted to go nuts with a truck I'd buy another one and do it up for fun so I still have the other car to get to work and back. Will have to look into the drive line backlash issue, every 80 I drove with this amount of Ks on it had it, but will do some research on it before deciding on which way to go, be it later model CVs or part time conversion.
I would like to retain the constant 4x4 if at all possible, I drove it home tonight in the wettest weather Melbourne has seen in a while and I found the road holding and accelleration on the wet greasy roads impressive to say the least, in the Nav it would have been fishtailing all over the place out of corners, whereas the 80 is just a case of point and shoot.

Wow that is one neat 80! what was wrong with the Navara , if you don't mind how much of your pennys , You should have got the Turbo diesel, the best motor made for the 80

Nothing was wrong with the Navara, just work got a bit slow and with all this talk of a recession coming sometime in the future I decided it was a good time to cut some debt, as for the turbo diesel, yes they are a great engine if you like a lot of noise, fuel usage is not a big issue for me, for the last 3 years I have done no more than 10,000ks per year, and with the short drives I do to work and back it would kill a diesel. As for the price, I picked it up for 11 grand.

Wow, Shonky!!.
I didnt see that comming. Great choice, I learnt to drive both on and off-road in my old mans 4.5 80, Much better choice than the diesel in my opinion. They go like the clappers
