Hello, I have a Prado turbo diesel auto. Currently my Prado is on 32" BFG MT with a 2" lift, So it has affected the economy, around town I usually get anywhere between 13-14.7L/100km and on the highway I have gotten 10.0L/100km but it's usually around 11-12L/100km. From what I have read the manuals are better on fuel then autos. I just added a snorkle and modified the intake to be more direct to the air filter, so hopefully that helps economy.

Mine's a manual running on Goodyear MTR's with a 2 inch lift, steel bullbar, winch and snorkel with intake modification and a DPChip. I could give you some comparison figures.

BUT!!!, there is something to consider when you put slightly larger tyres on from standard and then try to do a consumption comparison. The circumference of the tyre is greater so there is an error in the speedo/odometer compared to standard. I run 265/45/R16 MTR's and now when compared to a GPS unit my speedo/odometer is spot on. So I should reduce the consumption by 3.3% to compare it to the original Goodyear Grandyucks.

So here are some figures that I've got in a spreadsheet and averaged out over time of general driving.

Tyre-------Size----------Consumption-----Corrected
BFG AT---265/75/R16--12.8 L/100km---12.4 L/100km
MTR------265/75/R16---13.6 L/100km---13.1 L/100km

Highway long distance driving has seen the BFG's as low as 11.6 L/100km corrected and on the MTR's 12.7 L/100km corrected. I don't have any figures for the original tyres but I think they are around 11.2L/100km from things I've read over the years. So the extra mods and lumpier tyres do make a difference.

Regards
D.T.

rustynuts,
No problem, look for the drawers I made in the DIY area too for some cheaper mods. The Prado is a great little 4x4. Its not a hard core one but it was never meant to be. However you can take them a lot of places that would surprise a lot of people who think of them as a Mum's Taxi. The 1KZ-TE is one of the best engines that Toyota made IMHO, tough and reliable and not too thirsty. With a few mods they make a fantastic economical tough as guts tourer.

If I sound biased towards them, it's because I am. I love my Prado and so does the wife.

My auto 2001 TD Prado RV got between 9.5 and 10.5 l/100 km on a trip up from Melbourne to Central Qld. On another trip with a kayak on top and a bigger load, the average dropped to about 11 - 12 l/100 km. Around town it would be as low as 13-14 l/100 km. With 160 litres of fuel tank as standard, that's still a long way between drinks.

It's good to see that my fuel consumption isn't to high.

Hi All,

My 2001 GXL TD manual, has had 265/75 Cooper ST's, 2" OME for the last 90k. I average 11.4lt/100km adjusted for those tryes. I averaged 10.64lt for the 20k I used the standard Craptreks that came with it.
Overall the last 110k the Best is 10.1, worst is 13.86, all these figures are for full tanks not part tanks. I go to 500km on the sub tank then swap to main tank and fill up at around 1200km.
Hope this helps.

I forgot to mention the 3" exhaust with a straight through muffler on mine. It all helps with performance and economy.

I love the smell of diesel in the morning.

I may as well jump in here too. I have a 2000 TX manual Prado with a snorkel, BFG's 275 - 70 - 16's. I also have a Tune It module fitted which makes a HUGE difference when it comes to serious hill work. Anyway in relation to fuel economy I have never really calculated the exact economy of my little truck. When I purchased it in 2002 it was getting 1400Ks on a run and that was at the speed limit. Unfortunately this has gone to crap and returning only 1000ks per tank (Sub & Main). Speaking to the mechanic he said the injectors will definately need rebuilding and should be done at approx 100,000Ks. Mine has now clicked over 189,000ks so I am booking it in to have it done and hopefully this will bring her back to new. Hope this helps.

Are you buying for fuel economy or just for looks? I think it doesn't matter if it uses 10l or 12 if your going to put big tyres on it.

Nah bought it for practicality really. Wanted to get a 4b and had no idea what to get. I was going to get a Kia Sorento as the dealer said this is one of the best 4b's around!!!! Spoke to another dealer and he nearly fainted when I told him and he sold me the Prado. After buying it and learning a heap more about 4wding I am soooo glad I bout my little tough truck.

I've got a deso/auto and get 12-13 around town and as an overall average when combined off/on road

The best I've done so far is 9 and a bit to the 100 highway drivin at the speed limit loaded up with a roof rack.

This is an interesting thread from another forum. I haven't looked into it yet and I'm not sure if it even applies to the 1KZ-TE we have here in Oz, but interesting none the less.
