Cool Twistys FJ40 Hardtop, well, not anymore......

As most would know...I recently pulled the pin on my buggy build, and bought an FJ40. Since I picked it up yesterday I thought I'd start it's own buildup thread.

I bought it off a mate who has had it a little over 1 year. A while ago before he bought it, it seems the FJ40 has had a major rebuild. It's all been resprayed, and had the rust removed, thought there is little bits popping back here and there. A heap of bolts have been replaced with stainless ones. Interior has been re-done and some bucket seats installed, as well as a 140l fuel tank. Also under the bonnet is a 3F 4.2 Petrol 6cyl out of a 60 series.

Other add ones it currently has is a tube front bumper, GME UHF, Cd Player, Front Disc Brake Conversion, and 2" longer shackles. He had a custom set of leaf packs made by Dobinson which should give awesome travel, and around 4" lift, but he never installed them....they'll be going in once I get a road worthy on it.

It currently rides on 15x10's and 33" BFG All Terrains, but my mate eventually wants these back, so my 15x10 Mickey Thomson Classic II's will go on with most likely some 35x12.5 TrXus MT's.

After the springs and 35's go on, I will get some cheap auto lockers front and rear, and will get Brooksy to do a some custom barwork and a roll cage. Have also got 80 series power steering which I got with the zook when I bought it, which will now get fitted to this. Then I will just enjoy getting offroad again, and would love to do a Lexus V8 conversion with an auto way down the track.

Heres some pics.

I couldn't resist not bolting the 37x14 Iroks on for a look. Am really going to miss these tyres when they sell. I will put them back on and go for a bit of a run once I get the lift in (if I've still got them)

Looking forward to this little face lift . It will be a good experience as I have put in some time on building up 40/45 series Cruisers modifications as I had realised early in the piece that this would be a project vehicle for someone at some stage in my business.
Looks absolutely mint mate !!

Went for a spin in this thing today. I must say its awesome and can see why Dave bought it. Cant wait to see it with the lift and 35s. Should be a great toy and I am sure knowing Twisty itll be a weapon as well.

hehe...bit of a story behind this monring "spin". What was a quick run to the servo to get some breaky and put a little fuel in the FJ turned into about a 2 hr trip. Ran out of fuel on the way there....140l tank makes it hard to know when empty is actually empty. Anyway, after rolling as far as we could, we got my sister in law to come down with a Jerry Can. Stuck 25l in the FJ and off we went.....for about 50m. This would be my welcome to carby engines....it would start and idle, but wouldn't rev. We figured 25l in a 140l tank isn't much, so went and got another 25l....but this didn't fix it.

So I rang up my mate (the old owner) and he came down....After lot of mucking around checking fuel lines, and the fuel pump, it still would rev. Then took off all the air cleaner assembly and tried again, after a few revs to redline, it all started to come good. Must have sucked some dirt up from the bottom of the tank and blocked the carby a little. Now I know for next time!

Nice truck, should be good when its done. Dont get to carried away with it though, do what youve got to do to get it going then enjoy it off road.

Good luck.

PS: Got any info on the black hilux with roll bar in the background of the first picture with the big tyres on.
