Ive been looking into this myself... the rhino-rack system looks pretty good... basically you fix some permanent mounting rails along the top of the car and bobs your aunty....

Sprinterboy has this setup on his 4Runner. They are very strong and there are quite a lot of attachments for them. If you wanted them for life, these are the way to go since gutter mounted ones cause gutter problems eg. rust, bending etc..

I just installed the rhino rack system, the one with the rails that you permanently attach to the roof. The gutter mounts arent the best option, my parents car had all sorts of problems with theirs a few years back. However, if your only carrying really light loads on the road, they might work for you. If your gonna carry any serious load, or use them off road, go straight for the rail type, you wont regret it.

I too used to have them on my 4 Runner, went all round the country with a roof cage bolted to them and never had a problem. The only thing I wasnt keen on was riveting the rail to the roof.So I used Stainless steel screws, large S/S washers and S/S nyloc nuts.Had to take the roof liner out but it made a good job out of it.
