As said before I'd be very wary of a Landrover disco or rangie. Have a habit of breaking down at the worst of times. Meant to be awesome offroad...when they work. But I dont think it'd be worth the risk. Best bet would be a GU either 4.2td or something cheap, possibly with a blown engine and drop a 6.5 or 7.3 in it. Or a 5.4L boss engine if you were chasing a petrol. Leaves heaps left over for modding it to your hearts content, and leaves change for the petrol bill each week!

G'day,
Personally due to the toughness and reliability - you should be looking at a late model GU 4.2TD. there are a few mods that can be done to get more power - ie , 3" exhaust, dyno tune - fuel pump tuning , upgraded turbo, intercooler, or even supercharger.
And due to there coil all round live axles are still comfortable and very capable in the bush. Driving up the cape, canning stock route, kakadu etc i know id rather a coil live axle set up rather than IFS or leaf springs.
cheers
Dan

Knx2. Good luck with the purchase. Good idea to sort out what mods/accessories you want but one thing before buying. Check out with who you are buying your 4x4 from and ask what, if any, repurcussions they wil have on your new car waranty. And get it in writing on the receipt! Do NOT rely on word of mouth assurances, it will be denied later on and there is nothing you can do about it. Eg, radiator cracking or engine heat issues etc and you have aftermarket steel bull bar with lights winch etc and the car dealer/manufacturer may deny your claim due to extra weight, air flow restrictions etc. This has happened! Good luck.

Good advise LSE3.9 . Insurance company would probably be worth a call now thinking of it.

Knx2. Insurance co - agreed. Also, if considering changes to rims and tyres, suspension lift/changes etc run that past them too. If they agree again get it in writing and also [note well here] to check that your mods don't contravene ADR regs in your state. Just because the ins. co. add the mods to your policy doesn't mean they'll cover you when you claim. Don't rely on the fitting shop either. It won't count in the event of a claim which is denied. All insurance policies rely on the words "vehicle must be roadworthy" or similar. If you're outside of ADRs' then your coverage is gone.Cheers.

Hello Knx2. If you're planning on remote, single vehicle travelling then I would be wary of the Disco 3.
|
No offence and to other similiar type comments.........bollocks. Bluddy one eyed toyo/nissan types, seriously, if you take your vehicle off road, things happen. I have seen many other brands stranded, stuffed, axles, suspension etc go kaputt off road. In terms of dealerships etc outback, you will find that many take just as much time to get some replacement equipment as any other brand of 4WD. When it comes to the D3...not LR3, this aint the USA , best to speak to people who actually have them, drive them and take them off road. Also not one offs either as I know many people with D3's here and O/S who drive them over all sorts of continents and conditions. Not peaknuckles who heard from their brothers, mothers, sister who told them some story. Any new vehicle, especially in that price range....and I know, mine was $105k new is going to cost in servicing....but how much is too much or to little. The missus XR6 is normally around $400, my V8 D3 around $5-$600. Hopefully that deals with some of the urban myths in relation to the D3.
As for the D3 itself, absolute pleasure, best vehicle I have ever had. It is fantastic on road, has what I call practical luxury, I have the HSE so it came with all the bells and whistles and over the time got rid of the 19inch rims and got 18's with General Grabbers, plus a Kaymar Rear Bar. Off road....excellent, when I get some of those one eyed toyo/nissan types, they soon change their tune when they see it perform off road. Went to a farm 2 wkends ago, the farmer there, a die hard toyota fan with his land cruiser ute said lets go out the back country with a smirk on his face. Soon wiped it off when we were going through lantana, up steep spurs, ruts etc. Got back after about an hr and he was like "F... me, that did it so easily and in comfort". Have done almost a 100,000 kms with only a couple of warranty issues but nothing major, it has been a dream. I have attached some pics, not best quality, but couldnt get the others ones cause Photobucket is down , but at least shows that a car in the $100k + category does get out there amongst. Oh might I add that a Toyota Shorty, twin locked, on the same spot, threw his axle and couldnt get up,
Regards

man if they had a Darwin Award for stupid comments, that would have to rate right up there. When ever is any break down in any vehicle a "good time". With the millions of LR's out there, show me the statistics. Anyhoo Knx2, it would be well worth your while at least visiting a dealership and finding out for yourself, the D3/RRS even the new Fender have been winning the best 4WD awards here and Overseas for a reason, but find out for yourself,
Regards
Stevo...Still busting those D3 myths

If your setting it up for touring, ARB have a good range of accessories, their in Collingwood St, Osbourne Park. Sit down with em and discuss what you need/want and see if ya can push em hard on price, cos they drive a hard bargain, now that they not a frachise. Make sure you talk to one of the older guys, or the chick with long blonde hair, the young guys they have there pretneding to be salesmen are f**kn useless as tits on a bull.(ie they dont know a thing about 4x4's, they dont even know what they stock or how much it is)
For the suspension go to Opposite Lock, on Balcatta Road, Balcatta. Russ will sort ya out with Tough Dog gear and has plenty of stock, and a good range of tyres and wheels. PLus they do WAY more 3'' and above lifts than anyone else in Perth. They know their sh*t!!
As for the vehicle then a GU with the TD42t with only a few km, turbo and exhaust upgrade with intercooler, (see turbo tech, near Fauntelroy Ave, on Gt Eastern Highway in Ascot). 4" lift with heavy duty rear springs, posibly with polyair bags. And go to town decking it out with all the good stuff to make it comfy and usefull for the fun that your gonna have!
Cheers
Dave

as much as i'm a "one eyed toyo/nissan type", i have to agree with this comment....i don't believe the land rovers/range rovers to be any more unreliable off road than any of the Japanese marques....go back 30-40 years and the same may not be true....in fact many british cars of that era had a reputation for being unreliable, but i think a lot has changed since then...
as for dealer support, check out where you plan to go, i know that orange doesn't have a land rover dealership, but both bathurst and dubbo do....though i am sure one could arrange to get parts freighted out if need be....

Im not sure, but i think the only Landrover, Rangerover dealership is Barbagellos, in Perth. So in that regard it would be fine to own one if you lived in perth, but i think 'knx2' lives up Northern WA somewhere so maybe not a great option.
Tell me if im wrong but do youse fellas who own Landrover/rangerover only go to specialist mechanics/dealerships?
Cos fixing Toyotas especially and to a lesser extent patrols is big business up north, there arent to many other makes of 4x4 floating about. STD Parts are easy to come by (mostly) and chances are that if your having problems, one of the local mechanics has seen it dozens of times before.
Cheers
Dave

Hi BIGDAVET86 and good post. Yes. Specialist landrover workshops are the go for me and many others anyway. Specialist tools, computer programs etc and knowledge are often needed. Non specialist mechanics can often cause more problems then you went in with. Others throw up their hands at the sight of an electronic Rangie, Disco or Defender and tell you straight out that they can't help. Been there done that but I still own one. Air bag suspension. No trouble to change a faulty/holed bag if you've got one but you need a Landrover computer to reset the system so it works. Had a breakdown recently, 3 closeby [under 200 metres] mechanical workshops declined to help - vehicle taken to an independant workshop 11O kilometres away. Attending road side service mechanic couldn't fix it either. Small fault and one hour later mobile again.

G'day
No offence,
but thats why I like my 4.2TD nissan.... nice and simple so dont have to worry bout electronic probs.
What if this sought of thing happened half way up the cape or along the canning stock route....................
know a mate who had to tow a landrover a couple hundred km's on the cape with his GQ as the electronics buggered up. And also the landrover on the 4wd of the year test 4wd monthly did last year - didnt make it........
just dont know if i could rely on them too far from civilization......
